My Top Ten Favorite Bands Part Two

Merry Christmas!

Alright, so yesterday I decided to mix things up and talk about my ten favorite bands and why I like them. Without further adieu here's part two of my ten favorite bands.

5. Slipknot

Yep. I'm a maggot and I'm not ashamed to admit it at all. I've been listening to Slipknot since I was ten years old and the more I listen to them the more I fall in love with them. For starters, Corey Taylor is one of the most talented frontmen ever (he has the second highest vocal-range in modern music) He can scream. He can rap. Or he can sing his heart out and make you cry. To have been fronted by only one man over the majority of their career, Slipknot can sound drastically different from song to song.

There's also nine members of the band that are all very good at their own instruments. Joey Jordison was one of the most distinctive drummers in metal. Jay Weinberg is rock royalty and lives up to his name. Mick Thomson makes his fucking guitar talk. Absolutely no one. And I mean no one but Shawn Crahan could pull off playing a beer keg with a baseball bat. This whole blog could be devoted to analyzing Slipknot moments that point out how skilled they are as musicians and showmen. And if I sound like a fanboy, it's completely justified. If there's any band I can think of that deserves to be praised from the mountaintop its Slipknot.

My Favorite Songs -
  1. The Nameless
  2. Dead Memories
  3. People = Shit

4. Disturbed

David Draiman is one of the coolest, most down-to-earth dudes in metal. The dude has told his stories in interviews and in his songs, and he seems like a guy I'm willing to support.

Disturbed also has the honor of being the only band who have no albums I haven' t heard. I own and have listened to every Disturbed album end to end. Many of those albums don't have a single bad song on them. Asylum is flawless. Indestructible is flawless. Believe is unbelievably awesome. Ten Thousand Fists has one or two boring songs but is mostly amazing.

Also, I've noticed that Disturbed does something that Disturbed does something that almost always secures their place on the billboard 200. They release their filler songs as singles. The Night is a decent at best song that tied in with a fucking Wolfman remake. Asylum had songs about the Holocaust, fighting anxiety, depression, and internal conflict. And they all sound better than the Night yet it was the single. "Fire it Up" is so damn ridiculous it seems like a joke song. Yet Immortalized features "Save Our Last Goodbye" and "Never Wrong." You had to buy the album to hear those gems though. So you listen to their singles and say "This is kinda weak sauce but I'll check it out anyway." Then when you listen to the actual album you get blown away. I think the biggest evidence towards this is The Lost Children (Their B-Sides album) which deserved a Grammy for having nothing but amazing songs.

That's clever marketing at it's finest.

Also, I've started listening to so many different bands (most of them not even metal) after hearing Disturbed cover one of their songs. Disturbed is like a gateway drug to different genres of music.

My Favorite Songs -
  1. Ten Thousand Fists
  2. God of the Mind
  3. Dropping Plates

3. Iron Maiden

Tasty riffing. Operatic singing. Amazing live performances. You'll learn something if you listen to the lyrics. These guys are heavy metal legends for a reason. Everyone in the band is literally a guru with more than twenty years of experience polishing their craft. Bruce Dickinson talks and dresses like a walking meme. (Also the fucker flies planes and fences.) Steve Harris is the most cockney businessman / literary expert / smooth bassist this side of Jesus if he did those things and was Cockney. Janick Gers shreds like a motherfucker and holds his guitar like it's Excalibur. Nicko looks, talks and is hilarious. Adrian Smith is a fucking guitar god. And Dave Murray is clearly a human Teddy Bear. Iron Maiden is like a Heavy Metal boy band.

If I had to give one reason that I love this band so much it's that no one in his world but them could make a 20-minute instrumental song interesting. These guys regularly make seven minute long songs and they never overstay their welcome. There's something insanely special about that.
  1. Hallowed be The Name
  2. Prowler
  3. Iron Maiden

2. All That Remains

I'm going to go ahead and disclaim that these bands are listed in the order of which I enjoy listening to them, not by how good I think they are.

All That Remains has a badass frontman in Phil Labonte. He's an outspoken political commentator. He's fronted both Killswitch Engage and Five Finger Death Punch and was the original vocalist for Shadows Fall. And he just doesn't give a fuck. The lyrics don't rhyme or make sense? Phil don't give a fuck. This album they've marketed as metalcore has mostly country and hard rock songs on it? Phil don't give fuck. People keep claiming he's racist and homophobic on Twitter? Phil don't give a fuck.

Phil Labonte, pictured to the left, not giving a fuck.

Oli Hebert, god rest his soul, was one of the best guitarists this side of Eddie Van Halen. This band has made some less than superb albums, yet Oli refused to do anything but shred, riff, and solo the whole time he played on them. Through nonsensical lyrics, bad production, and abrupt genre shifts Oli Hebert shined as an amazing guitarist.

But if there's one reason why I love this band so much it's because they're good at whatever they're doing (most of the time.) They started off with an amazing melodeath album. They put out back-to-back genre-defining metalcore epics. And despite accusations of selling-out and over-production, their new shit is good when it wants to be. Phil Labonte has proved that he sing, scream, death growl and pig-squeal. Everyone else in the band is either Boston metalcore royalty or at the very least  experienced musicians in their own rights. I already mentioned that Phil was in Shadows Falls, but All That Remains also has Bury Your Dead, Diecast and Flatlined veterans among its ranks.
The entire band is so well-rounded that when they do make something bad, it's more like they were having an off-day rather than them just outright sucking.

My favorite songs -
  1. Criticism and Self-realization
  2. This Darkened Heart
  3. The Air That I Breathe

1. Killswitch Engage

Yep Boston's own metalcore gods themselves are my favorite band. With the amount of times KSE, someone from the band, or someone closely associated with them have showed up on this list, this should have been an easy guess.

Killswitch Engage combine positive lyrics with near-flawless playing. I cannot think of a single song I don't like. If I have any complaints with their songs it's that some of them are too short.

The live show that these guys put on is unrivaled. Adam D and Jesse Leach have undeniable chemistry and hilarious dialogue. Mike D is one of the coolest guitarists today. The way he runs around the stage and vibes with his guitar may look tame next to Adam Dutkiewicz, but he is damn near always off the chain. Speaking of Adam Dutkiewicz; the man's stage presence cannot be matched -

Joel Stroetzel makes playing guitar riffs you just know are impossible, look like he's making a sandwich. And he does this while towering over everyone looking like a viking. Justin Foley headbangs and whips his invisible locks smiling ear-to-ear.

I've never listened to a band that makes you want to buy their live performances. But Killswitch Engage does. Adam D is prone to screaming such random shit you can't take the song seriously anymore. It's not unusual for the guy to start barking like a rabid dog during a quiet breakdown.

Jesse Leach is an enigmatic and positive bastard. He compliments the bands he's touring with and the city he's playing in endlessly. Even if their are sound issues, or he's not feeling the crowd, he gives it his all. His lyrics are inspiring. He never ever talks like the punk rock star he is. If you listen to him he sounds like your experienced uncle who always gives you good advice.

Howard Jones was a really good singer, screamer, and stage presence. The guy can captivate a crowd effortlessly. (The only bad thing I can say about him is that towards his last years with KSE he really showed how little effort he needed to do anything. Which started resulting in low-energy, repetitive songs and performances.)

This band truly makes you fall in love with them through how they are. But they also make some good-ass metal.

And Adam D shreds.

All the time.

My favorite songs -

(There's really too many I love to pick a favorite song. I'mma cheat.)

Pre-Howard
  1. My Last Serenade
  2. Numbered Days
  3. Temple from the Within

Howard Era

  1. Rose of Sharyn
  2. For You
  3. Take this Oath

Post-Howard
  1. Beyond the Flames
  2. Strength of the Mind
  3. A Tribute to the Fallen

Well those were my top five favorite bands. They're always subject to change as I listen to music constantly.

Have a good night, bitches.

My Top Ten Favorite Bands Part One

Hey, what's up?

I've decided to mix things up a little. Instead of just posting my journal from this morning, I'm going to see if a little bit of classic blogging will spice things up on this site. Without further adieu, here are my ten favorite bands -

10. Serpentine Dominion

This was an easy pick because this band only has one album. That's why they're at the lowest spot. I love them but they don't have enough material for them to compare to everyone else on this list.

This is a supergroup consisting of Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch Engage on guitar and backup vocals, Shannon Lucas from the Black Dahlia Murder as the drummer, and Corpsegrinder as the lead vocalist. And my boy Jesse David Leach, also of Killswitch Engage, wrote the lyrics for the album. (He will definitely be showing up again on this list.)

My favorite thing about this band is how unique their sound is. They've got Corpsegrinder screaming about prosperity and changing the world (Which is what you get with the Jesse Leach lyrical package) Adam D's soft singing voice provides a sweet contrast to Corpsegrinder's demonic screaming. And Adam D shreds. All the time. The best thing about this band / album is the chugging and shredding that leads up to their choruses.

This band prompted me to check out the Black Dahlia Murder. I can't say I regret that at all. Because Trevor Strnad's vocal range inspired me to learn how to start death growling myself. I still have no clue how he can alternate between highs and lows so quickly.

My Favorite Songs -
  1. This Endless War
  2. Sovereign Hate
  3. Divide, Conquer, Burn, Destroy

9. Times of Grace

My next favorite band also only has one album under their belt (With one in production.) This is what I call an uber-super-group (Like Audioslave just being Rage Against the Machine with Chris Cornell instead of Zach De La Rocha.) In the studio, Adam D and Jesse Leach (Told you he'd show back up) of Killswitch Engage recorded everything with Adam's wife on backup for some tracks. So this is basically just two members of Killswitch Engage.

This band is very spiritual.  Adam D wrote these lyrics when he was in the hospital with the status of his music career up in the air. So the lyrics talk about hope and connection with the world and an (unnamed) higher power. It's just enough religion to not be on the nose or pretentious. And it also helps that Adam D shreds. All the time.

My Favorite Songs -
  1. Live in Love
  2. Worlds Apart
  3. Willing

8. Rainbow

I love Ronnie James Dio and everything he's done. But I'd argue that Rainbow got better after he left.

Rainbow has been through at least four singers since Dio left and every single one of them brought their own unique sound and ushered in a new era for the band. With Dio, the band was a fantastical heavy metal act. With Graham Bonnet, they were spectacular glam rockers. Joe Lynn Turner solidified them as the swooning pop-balladers they became. Doogie White didn't really change much for the group but he tore it up on Stranger in Us All. Nowadays with Ronnie Romero, they've combined all of their previous sounds into one big nostalgic genre-monster.

Rainbow has been around since the 70s and they're still touring and putting out potential hits. I love how they've basically reinvented themselves with every era.

My Favorite Songs -
  1. Still I'm Sad (Stranger In Us All)
  2. Lost In Hollywood
  3. Stone Cold

7. Nickelback

Yes, Nickelback is one of my favorite bands.

My first CD was All the Right Reasons. Before that I was listening to Avril Lavigne, the All American Rejects and whatever the hell was on the radio. Nickelback gave me a taste for something different. I most certainly wouldn't be here writing this, if it weren't for them.

Also, they're fucking catchy. I don't care how bad Nickelback gets, at their worse they're still able to craft a nice-sounding song. The lyrics may not make any sense at all, and Chad Kroeger may sound like he's singing with a burrito in his mouth, but the song will damn sure get stuck in your head.

At their best, we get "Feed the Machine" and "When We Stand Together".

If anything Nickelback is just really lazy and inconsistent. But at least they enjoy themselves and don't give a fuck what anyone thinks about them.

If these guys respect themselves enough to headline next to Judas fucking Priestt then I have nothing but respect for them too...

My Favorite Songs -
  1. Savin' Me
  2. How You Remind Me
  3. Rockstar

6. Mercyful Fate

Oh, boy Mercyful Fate. I've spent many nights singing along to King Diamond in my dorm. Having to pick just three favorote songs by this band is insanely difficult. Their songs can sound so different I forget they're all by the same group. I just know that I love them. They can go from crooning, soft and creepy to loud, shredding and in your face. "Devil Eyes" and "Doomed by the Living Dead" wouldn't even sound like they were by the same band if it weren't for King's distinctive vocals. And then throw songs like "Since Forever" and "Curse of the Pharoahs" in the mix and you've got a diverse catalogue. I also love that King Diamond can somehow always find a way to get a Satanic message across and that he always does it in his signature falsetto. That's the Mercyful Fate brand. Whether the song is doom metal or disco you'll know who it is.

  1. The Oath
  2. Doomed by the Living Dead
  3. Welcome Princes of Hell

Tune back in tomorrow when I finish talking about my top ten favorite bands.

Vanilla Ice is Too Darn Nice

Hey, what's up?

So I'm sitting out here on the porch again. I'm drinking some coffee. I just got done with my incantations two or three minutes ago. I feel like I'm just getting better and better at them. I just keep getting more and pumped everyday. The amount of energy I'm getting is skyrocketing.

How high my energy levels were this morning...

Today I have to write a positivity journal for the whole week.

Some context: Everyday at the end of the day I write the three most positive things that happened and the one most negative thing that happened. I'm also trying to start writing Positivity Journals covering the whole week and eventually the whole month.

I can tell you I learned one thing this week. It's not to take myself so seriously. This is all bullshit. These egos, these self-images that we set up. They don't matter. Be humble or be humbled. That's what I learned this week.

Speaking of learning I'm planning on hanging with one of my friends from high school today. Pretty excited about that shit. I got that going for me which is nice as Vanilla Ice.

Clearly, one of the nicest dudes you'll meet...

Anyway, I'm going to end this because I feel like I'm fucking rambling.

Peace...

Unwarranted Confidence and Electrical Incompetence

Hey, what's going on?

I've got a busy day today. A busy day being the most awesome person in every room I enter.
That's for damn sure.

I'm not saying I'm this badass but
I'll leave it here for comparison...

I'm sitting out here on the front porch getting ready to meditate, drinking a cup of myself. That's right I got a whole drink named after me because I'm that awesome.

Cup of Joe: Patent Indefinitely Pending

Before I came out here I practiced those Tony Robbins brand incantations. And I'm 300% fucking pumped right now. I'm ready for the fight.

This morning when I was heating up that cup of myself all the power went off. Initially, I was thinking that something was fucked up with Georgia Power (We had an outage on Monday.) But I looked outside and all the lights were on in the parking lot. And I looked in the living room and all the electronics were still lit up. That's when I realized the issue was only in the kitchen.

So being the master electrician I am, I made my way in there, smacked the circuit breaker and turned my coffee back on. Only for all the power in the kitchen to go right the fuck back off.

So now we know that Zzaxx possessed our microwave last night.

That mischievous SOB...

I've got to go meditate on ways to fight his ass off...

Peace out...

Catching Feelings for Emotional Healings

Good fucking morning.

I feel confident as all hell this morning. I'm telling you those incantations really fucking work. They get you amped up for whatever the hell you're about to do.

These guys clearly did incantations before this picture...

So I'm out here recording this journal entry like a boss. I'm ecstatic to report Google's speech-to-text is now my bitch. I figured out if you talk really slowly it understands your words.

Speaking of my many bitches I had a nightmare last night. This girl I've been crushing on for a long time (I feel immature even saying that) linked up with this guy I knew from high-school. That made me feel.

It made me feel like the real me could come out of hiding after so long. Deep inside even though that dream coming true would hurt, I hope it happens.

You know something? My self-perception is off the charts but my skills with women are fledgling at best. Sometimes I...

Why am I talking about this shit? This ain't a diary...

Grown men don't have diaries!
Fight me!

Anyway, during this morning's mindfulness meditation, I'll be focusing on the inner feeling channel. I'll be taking note of where my emotion makes me feel in my body and focusing on those areas for seven seconds at a time. (Again, Leo from actualized.org explains this whole process in depth here.)

You know, I feel like this has come to an end.

BA-DUMM-TSS!

I know the way out...

Thursday, December 20, 2018: Badass Feats and Ending Streaks

Hey, what's up?

I can't believe it's almost the end of December. We're at the end of 2018. You know I'll readily admit this was the greatest year of my life. So much change and so much growth. We knocked this fucking year out of the park.

Yesterday I worked fucking hard and it felt amazing. I raked and shoveled those leaves like a motherfucker. I also rammed into the curb and bust out my dad's tire. I had to change it myself cause he went into shock after the whole incident. But that's another story for another time.

Needless to say, I'm a badass motherfucker and I fucking felt like it yesterday.

My body was hurting so fucking bad when I got done though. My back my feet and my arms were all aching when I got home. I couldn't wait to go to sleep. Because I slept all that fucking pain off and I feel amazing right now. It's like I didn't even do anything yesterday I feel so good.

That's the power of a fast metabolism.

The power of a strange brain is that I have Def Leppard's "Gods of War" stuck on replay in my fucking head. Here, have a listen, too...

Anyway, on today's episode of mindfulness meditation, I'll be focusing on the outer seeing channel.
I'll be taking note of everything I see and describing the Colours and the Shapes.

You know I gotta fill the entry up with unnecessary pictures
make this reference...

Let's see how that goes. Pun intended.

[BA-DUMM-TSSS]

I'll see myself out...

Also, I ended my No-Fap streak today. It's been five days. So I don't have that going for me anymore, which is bad...

Tuesday, April 10, 2018: I Skip Ahead for a Preview, An Angry One Too

It's 6:17 a.m. It's raining or sprinkling to be more literal. I just got done ranting. I'm getting ready to fucking meditate. (We've got five fucks per minute this time!)

Every second we stray closer to a broken Fuck-o-meter.

What the fuck was I ranting about? The bullshit life I lead. I get why Johnson constantly told me I was full of shit.

I am.

How'd I come to this conclusion?

This morning I burnt my tongue drinking hot coffee. Why was I drinking coffee? Because I passed out in AP Stats yesterday and I can't have that shit happening again. I've got to pass, so I can graduate in May and walk across that stage in a suit and fucking tie like Justin Timberlake.

It's going to look exactly like this, except eight inches smaller...

Yeah, basically I'm just there to get a fucking diploma and get the fuck out.

Warning: Rant Incoming

I try to be social. I try to look like I give a fuck about any of those God damn nuggets. But I don't. The more I try, the more I realize that I just don't give a shit. If that roof caves in on every single one of those people I wouldn't give a damn. Sure I got one dude I'd try to save but fuck the rest of them.

I believe it was that burning of the tongue this morning that made me realize how stupid it is that I'm  doing some shit I don't want to do, to do some shit I don't want to do, to do some more shit I don't want to do, to lead a life that I don't want to fucking live. If this is living, O Death come through the fucking door with your double barrel shotgun and shoot me right fucking now.

This is seriously the closest thing I could find...
Grab the crayons...

So here I am with my tablet in my hand recording my journal for the day. It's every fucking day bro. Honestly, if I could tell you how I felt...

I don't fucking know what the fuck I got to say right here.

I feel angry. I feel confused. I just want to go fucking meditate. I want to go fuck a couple girls and throw back a couple beers but I got to go to school. I don't have to go to school but I choose to go to school so I can at least make the few people I can make smile keep smiling. Even though after I graduate and say "Fuck college." they're going to start frowning like everyone else.

This journal entry is starting to sound more like my podcast. Hell, maybe I need to go ahead and record an episode. But, I don't want my podcast to turn into me bitching about my day and bitching about my life because who the fuck wants to hear that shit? Who the fuck wants to turn in to hear Joe Rogan crying about his life? No one! No fucking body! When I do my podcast I want to be at my highest just like him.

Bitches...
